TitleWilliam Gilberd of Colchester
-
DescriptionOil painting on canvas. Portrait of William Gilberd of Colchester by Frank Daniell. The object has been identified as part of the LGBT+ collections as it depicts William Gilberd. He was a pioneer in the field "electromagnetism" and spent his final years as physician to Queen Elizabeth I and then James I. Unusual for the time, he never married or had children, and this was believed to be an active decision. The historian Thomas Fuller (1662) stated that he “never married, purposely to be more beneficial to his Brethren. Although this does not confirm Gilberd's sexuality it may suggest he was asexual and/or aromantic, showing no interest in either men or women.
