DescriptionPortrait of William Mason, by Charles Head, 1798. William Mason was Alderman of the Borough of Colchester and Mayor in 1796. He was also Captain Commandant of the Loyal Colchester Volunteers. Mason died in 1802.The Loyal Colchester Volunteers corps was raised in June, 1797, under the command of William Mason. The cost of clothing, arms and equipment was borne by the members, who undertook to serve in any part of Essex in event of invasion.
