DescriptionAn aureus of the emperor Hadrian. It is an "Emperor riding" type.The object has been identified as part of the LGBT+ collections as it depicts the Roman emperor Hadrian. Hadrian married a woman, Vibia Sabina, for political reasons only and they never had any children. He openly went around with his lover Antinous, who he had met in Greece. Unfortunately, Antinous died in suspicious circumstances when the pair were touring Egypt. Hadrian was so distraught he turned Antinous into a god, setting up temples and shrines in his name across the Empire.
