DescriptionAureus of Septimius Severus, legionary typeThis is an example of a military issue produced by Severus at the start of his reign to celebrate his victory and valour, the loyalty of his troops and individual legions by name. The fifteen legions thus honoured by Severus include all the legions of the Rhine and Danube, except Legio X Gemina in Pannonia. Only Legio I Minerva, VIII Augusta and XIV Gemina have both gold and silver coins.
