DescriptionA gold ten shilling siege piece depicting a Castle. The image is not of Colchester Castle, but is a generic design. To the left of the castle is a crowned C and to the right is a crowned R, standing for Carolus Rex, Latin for King Charles. Underneath is OBS COL, standing for Obsidium Colcestri, Latin for the siege of Colchester. 1648 is at the bottom of the coin, showing the year it was made. The X and S between the 6 and 4 indicate its value of 10 shillings. Former curator's have suggested siege tokens were "almost certainly an Eighteenth century souvenir", which is also possible once the coins came out of circulation. Siege tokens from Colchester are incredibly rare with no other examples in the Colchester collection.
