DescriptionA sestertius of Nero, issued around AD 62-68. The heads side show a bust of Nero facing right with the inscription IMP NERO CAESAR AVG PM TR POT PP - Imperator (emperor/conqueror) Nero Caesar Augustus, Pontifex Maximus (High Priest) Tribunicia Potestas (Power of Tribune), Pater Patriae, (Father of the Fatherland). The reverse side shows Nero mounted on a horse, wearing a cape and carrying a spear, with another soldier on horseback behind him, with the inscription DECVRSIO - a word used to denote a military manoeuvre. There is debate about what this means since Nero did not actively campaign. The Boudican revolt, and sacking of Colchester, occurred during Nero's reign, around AD 61 - and these coins would have been minted not long afterwards, starting from AD 62. The finding of this coin in Colchester suggests that despite the destruction, the Roman colony at Colchester was soon rebuilt and repopulated. Though it never regained the importance it held as provincial capital.
