DescriptionA copper alloy coin known as an 'as', dating to the reign of Emperor Nero. It has been pierced so that it could be used as a pendant. If the hole had not been made the obverse (front) would have read- NERO CLAVD CAESAR AVG GER P M TR P IMP P P -and the reverse (back)- PONTIF MAX TR POT IMP P P -with- S C -either side of the figure.This coin was selected for the Wicked Spirits exhibition as it has been pierced. Pierced coins have been worn as a form of magical protection since the Roman period.
