TitleThe Newe Testament
-
DescriptionThis New Testament bible was printed in 1538. It has 19th century binding in purple leather. This English version of the bible was selected for the Wicked Spirits exhibition as it relates to the Witchcraft Act of 1604 and the case of witchcraft from North East Essex in 1645. Latin bibles were no longer permitted and reading from them might appear like incantations to those who were unfamiliar with Latin. Witches reading from strange books in mysterious languages continues to be a trope today.
