DescriptionIn the 1800s sugar came pressed into solid loaves - large cones up to 60cm in height. Sugar cutters like this one - made of cast iron and mounted on a base - were used in shops to break off pieces for sale to customers. In the 1700s sugar was a luxury but it soon became hugely popular. From the 1740s until the 1820s, sugar was Britain's most valuable import. The high-quality of these sugar-related objects are in stark contrast to the poor living conditions of enslaved people on the sugar plantations. Hundreds of thousands of people suffered to bring this commodity to British tables.
