DescriptionPostcard of a stained glass window, featuring Boudica, Queen of the Iceni, from Colchester Town Hall. The object has been identified as part of the LGBT+ collections as it depicts Boudica. In the Victorian period 'Boudica' was used to refer to women who didn't marry. It is believed to have later turned into the phrase 'Bull Dyke', with 'dyke' being an offensive slang term to refer to lesbians in the modern day. Some lesbians have chosen to reclaim the word and use it amongst themselves.
