bodice, bodice

Green silk bodice with cream silk and organza collar, cuffs and fill-in. Embroidered 'Tarn and Co, Newington Causeway, London S.E.', with a coat of arms. Circa 1880. Bodice: main material is green silk with woven pattern & high collar of cream silk with a cream organza covering with three frills edged with cream ribbons, and a lace trim at the top & front decoration gives the effect of large turned back lapels from shoulders to waist of cream silk with a lace covering & in between the lapels is an attached fill-in of cream silk with a loose organza top layer with 26 layered short frills trimmed with narrow ribbon - this goes from collar to bottom of waist, with the fastening on the left & layer of green cotton/silk under the jabot (same as lining) fastens centre front & bodice ends in a point centre front and centre back, and is boned & bodice is hemmed with two folded layers of same green silk & full length sleeves with slim fitting cuffs, with a chevron pattern at the top of the sleeves in green silk and with pointed cuffs with a cream silk and ribbon inner & inside belt of black fabric with metal clasp, with makers name embroidered in red. Fastening: complex fastenings of black and brass metal hook and eyes & collar fastens centre front with hooks and eyes - the left side is partly loose and fastens to the top of the garment & front fastening on the real left where the fill-in meets the lapel - there are two layers of hooks and eyes, one at the very edge of the fill in which fastens under the lapel and one on the very edge of the lapel which fastens onto the organza layer & the green cotton/silk false under bodice fastens centre front from neck to waist with hooks and eyes & there is one further hook and eye on a small tab on the centre of the waist hem.
