DescriptionMulticoloured velvet waistcoat with brown calico back. Regency period. Worn by James Wyld. Note found in pocket reads 'James Wyld 1790-1836, Geographer Royal to the King. Introduced the art of lithography into England. First applied it to the preparation of the plans of action fought in the peninsula. The title of Geographer Royal he inherited from his ancestors and transmitted it to his sons.' Front of silk velvet with horizontal stripes - black stripes alternating with multicoloured stripes of yellow, orange, red and grey/brown & large shawl collar & single breasted with five buttonholes and three buttons remaining & buttons are of a well worn velvet & two welted straight pockets on front waist, with a braid edging & back is brown calico and has two pairs of ties to adjust side & back is constructed from three pieces, including a yoke & all lined in cream calico.
