DescriptionMan's dark blue cotton velvet cap. Crown has an oval shaped top with piped edge over cord of a very worn black or brown fabric & straight sides decorated with a further line of cording and a panel of black ribbed silk with a scalloped edge and two rows of black cotton cord in three loops in the centre and finishing in small loops on each side. Small peak covered in velvet and stiffened. Lining of black glazed cotton quilted in a diamond pattern with pale blue stitching. Stiffened canvas interlining can be seen through one of the holes. Machine stitched. Bottom edge has been coarsely hand stitched as a repair. Paper stamp on the inside printed with 'J. P. GREEN CHELMSFORD' and handwritten symbols. Second paper stamp has size 6 3/4. Circa 1870s.
