DescriptionMan's cap of wool and cotton mix fabric in a textured weave with a soft crown and stiffened peak. Cap has two flaps on each side with rounded edges that are trimmed in a brown silk ribbon and attached at the top of the crown with two black silk covered buttons. The back of the crown has a second layer of the black fabric edged in the brown silk ribbon and the front is decorated with a wide silk ribbon (once black?) tied in a bow at the centre. The peak and the bottom of the crown is trimmed in the brown silk ribbon. The cap is lined in a glazed black cotton quilted in a diamond pattern with a dark blue thread. The underside of the peak has two paper stamps - one with 'J. P. GREEN CHELMSFORD' and hand written symbols, the other with 6 1/2.. Circa 1870s.
