DescriptionWhite and green striped silk two-piece dress with embroidered feathers. Consists of a dress and separate matching petticoat, with optional muslin and lace sleeve inserts. About 1780. Expensive, possibly French silk. Separate petticoat. Silk sashes and satin bands. Bodice has been taken up. Engagent (separate) sleeves of machine lace. Organza ruffles may be later 19th century. Elastic added later. Dress: White and green striped silk dress with embroidered feathers & large size & low square neckline with cream net frill & front of bodice meets edge to edge, centre front, and fastens with three hooks and eyes (missing two hooks) and a linen tie centre neck & front of bodice finishes in a cut off vee in the centre bottom & sleeves are just below elbow length, and are shaped at the elbow, and have horizontal stripes & sleeves have small pleats where they join the shoulder & back of the bodice drops to a vee at centre back and is constructed from six panels - two of the panels are pieced & bodice is lined in cream linen & skirt is open fronted and is evenly pleated onto the bodice & pocket slits both sides & very deep fine cream silk lining to hem. Petticoat: made from same silk as dress & pleated evenly at the waist & fastens either side of hips with cotton ties (one missing) & later addition of elastic sewn into a silk tape around the waist & hem is decorated with two same width bands of fine cream silk ribbon all the way around & deep panel of fine cream silk lining to inside bottom of hem. Sleeve inserts: Engagent (separate) sleeves & cotton muslin arm pieces & net with embroidered lace frill at the end.
