DescriptionPink silk brocade sack back dress, in two pieces - skirt and open robe. Circa 1760. over robe: silk brocade (of two colours) sack back open robe & linen lined bodice, with a central panel of cotton lining, and a fine waist tape & skirt part is unlined & bodice shows evidence of alteration at the back - widened & elbow length sleeves with three tiers of asymmetric ruffles edged with cream and pink chenille braid & sleeves have a layer of coarse bobbin lace and a layer of net with lace edging & bodice opening edged with panel of ground fabric trimmed with chenille edging in a figure of eight design & skirt opening is edged with one panel of pleated ground fabric with chenille edge, and a narrow strip of chenille edged circular raised sections (some of which still have wool padding) & pocket slits in the skirt part & three layers on inserted pleats at the waist on either side, over the top of the pocket slits & sack back constructed from a pair of layered box pleats falling from the neck & back of the dress is made from three panels. skirt: constructed from six panels & hemmed with a pleated frill on the front, with a larger pleat and ruched swag above (all edged with chenille braid) & back of skirt is plain but with middle upper section of a cream linen covered in silk & back waist is of fine cream linen & fastens both sides of the waist with drawstrings above open seams & hem is lined with another layer of linen covered in silk.
