DescriptionConcealed garment. Short coat or possibly a doublet of brown wool and linen with one purple velvet cuff, found walled up in an old building. Circa 1650. Could be a coat from after 1666 (when Charles II imposed a new fashion for longer coats) or a serving man's coat from c.1650 (serving men didn't wear doublets, they wore short coats). Made of a heavy brown wool with a pile and has remains of two different types of wool and linen lining. The coat buttons up the centre front to a high round neck. Button holes are finished in linen and with turks head woven buttons. One sleeve remains which is full in cut and shaped around the elbow. The cuff is of purple velvet (possibly mohair) roughly attached to the sleeve and has one wooden button covered in threads. The skirt of the coat is divided into four tabs or panels which are lined to give extra fullness over the hips, the fabric has been left unhemmed.
