DescriptionCoat of Major-General Robert Douglas of the British Army. Red wool tail coat with black collar, lapels and cuffs. With gold thread aiguillette. Circa 1814. Coat: Uniform tail coat of red wool. High stand collar that is black at the front and decorated with two lines of entwined goldwork embroidery and two gold plated buttons. Aguillette on right shoulder that extends over right sleeve and attachs to two buttons on front. Aguillette attached to shoulder by cotton ties threaded through eyelet holes. Nothing on left shoulder. Full length sleeves, each with black cuffs and two pairs of chevroned rank stripes of goldwork embroidery with a button at centre (on the forearms). Centre front fastening of 11 concealed metal hooks and eyes. There is a "lapel" of black wool either side of the opening, each decorated with six pairs of goldwork embroidery with 12 buttons to give a double breasted effect. Jacket finishes at hip length at front. Back of coat is plain above hip level. Two long tails extend from this, each with cream turnbacks decorated centrally with knot motifs. Each tail is decorated with two pairs of goldwork embroidery chevrons with gold button. Two short lengths of embroidery with buttons at centre between tails. Two concealed pockets in outside of tails. Lining: main lining of cream wool twill, tails lined in cream fulled wool, sleeves lined in white cotton. Stiffened interlining on each side of centre front. Pocket of white cotton in left side of centre front opening. Five horizontal lines of quilting just below collar. Inside collar is lined in cream fulled wool which has been quilted in an alternating diamond and oval pattern. Aiguillette: One length of goldwork cord has been plaited to form a shoulder piece, with two long loops and two plaited end lengths extending loosely down over the arm and chest. One loop goes under the arm. One loop extends across to the chest, attached with a small loop sewn under the third button down on the right side. One end length is a three-plait that hangs loosely and ends in a pointed tag. The other end length is a four-plait that is attached, just above the tag, to the fourth button down on the right side. Buttons: Gold plated domed buttons decorated with crossed sword and baton above a crown, inside a laurel wreath.
