DescriptionTwo piece oyster silk brocade dress with Watteau pleat (sack backed). Overdress with underskirt. 1760s Overdress: low square neckline with a decorative trim & fastens at front with eight hooks and eyes from neck to waist & blunt point at waist, with two weights to hold shape & lined with cotton & front of skirt is open, also with decorative trim to edges & also a wavy decorative trim either side of the opening & sleeves are above elbow length, with a double long pointed frill at the ends extending past the elbows & back of the overdress has watteau pleats at the neck, which hang all the way to the bottom of the garment & pads (later addition?) fixed inside on hips. Skirt: full skirt, now pleated around the waist but would originally have been gathered in more tightly & plain back, with three decorative flounces and a frill at the hem on the front.
