DescriptionLady's wheat straw hat with separate grey head scarf, possibly used for motoring. From the premises of Miss Monson, Milliner, East Hill. Circa 1910-1920 Hat is made from two woven natural coloured wheat straw hoods, centre crown and brim of one, then the crown is made from the second hood. Chinese production. Joined together by hand stitching, edge of brim is machine stitched over a millinery wire. No lining to crown, no hat band, no visible signs that these ever existed, no makers label. The shape is right but the lack of finishing is troubling because it would have been difficult to wear (hair would have caught in the raw edges of the straw) - was this hat made as a reproduction? Scarf is made of faded grey silk muslin with hem ends decorated with drawn thread work, gathered to centre front edge decorated with button covered in same fabric. Scarf is selvedge on the front edge and is machine stitched rolled hem on the back edge. Headscarf torn and very faded, machine stitching is coming undone in places, edge of brim damaged
