DescriptionUniform jacket of First Essex Yeomanry Cavalry. Dark blue wool facecloth with red collar and cuffs, and metal looped epaulettes. 1825-1829. Outer: Dark blue wool facecloth jacket. Red wool facecloth high stand collar decorated with two lines of silver thread braid and two pieces of knotwork. Epaulettes of different layers - red wool facecloth base, then slightly smaller navy blue wool edged with silver thread braid, then metal rings graduating from small to large from edges inwards - sewn onto shoulders. With button and oval metal loop near collar. Full length shaped sleeves with red wool facecloth cuffs edged with two lines of silver thread braid - the top line extends in a knot up the forearm. Single breasted, fastening at centre with 20 white metal buttons. Front decorated with 23 white metal buttons down either side from shoulders to centre front. Bottom hem and opening edged with red piping. Finishes at hip level front and back. Back decorated with two lines of silver metal braid with knotwork detail, curving inwards from shoulder blades and then out at hip level. Two vertical, padded cartridge shaped pieces at centre of back hem. Lining: White cotton lining. Some quilting across the chest. Collar and inside edge are faced in dark blue wool. Buttons: Domed white metal buttons with '1st E.Y' written inside star on obverse. Makers 'T. Riddell, Drury Lane' written on reverse.
