DescriptionNon-officers 'other ranks' uniform jacket of the West Essex Volunteer Cavalry. Dark blue wool with red collar and cuffs. 1802-3. Napoleonic, circa 1802 -1803. Dark blue wool hip length jacket. High stand collar of red wool facecloth decorated with cream cotton braid knotting and trim. One button on either side of the collar but no shoulder straps. Full length, shaped sleeves with red wool facecloth cuffs decorated with cream braid knotting extending up the forearm. Cuffs fasten with one self covered button. Single breasted, fastening with 17 metal buttons (one missing). There is a decorative vertical line of 17 metal buttons on each side of the front. the buttons are silver plated brass, decorated with W.E.V.C., a crown and a wreath. There are horizontal slit pockets either side of the waist. The back of the jacket is decorated with cream braid knotting. The bottom edge of the jacket is trimmed with red wool piping. The bottom edge is straight all around but meets in a slight vee at centre back. Lined with cotton, with three waist ties at centre back. Pocket on inside left breast. Name handwritten in back of lining - possibly "W. Luard"
