DescriptionEvening dress made of figured silk satin with a woven pattern of wavy lines and stylised leaves and flowerheads. The bodice has a very low wide neckline filled in with muslin and blonde lace with black velvet piping all of which was probably added later. The short sleeves are rouched and puffed with blonde lace around the opening and are decorated with three rows of cream twisted silk cord and glass beaded braid. Opens down centre back and fastens with a metal hook an eye at the neckline and waist with 13 eyelet holes for laces in between. One long tan silk lace is knotted into an eyelet hole. The shoulder seams and bodice hem are piped and it has three bones at centre front in a fan to support the very deep V-shaped point. Bodice is lined in white linen. Skirt is constructed of six panels which are cartridge pleated onto the bodice with a gap at the centre front and a small opening in the centre back. The front opening creates an open robe style, this and the hem have a scalloped edge trimmed with blond lace (which is different from the bodice lace) and the same cream cord and bead braid on the sleeves. The skirt is lined with stiffened muslin, hand stitched 36 in panels. Separate collar of rouched dress fabric with a centre panel of rouched off white net and the bottom edge is trimmed with the same blonde lace as the sleeves of the dress. After alteration; Bertha shaped, made of rouched silk and net (? also made later for theatrical purposes), skirt 2008.C18 (D9), quilted pink satin, made to go with it. They have cut the front of the dress's skirt open to resemble an 18th century dress, this would have been worn over the petticoat. For theatrical purposes. Bodice has been let out three times at front, also at side seams but these are chain-stitched (machine). The dress has been heavily altered from its original 1840s style to resemble an 18th century open robe dress. 1840s, altered in the 1880s, possibly for theatrical purposes.
