Grey silk satin dress comprising of bodice, skirt and belt. Decorated with looped silk cord braid. Bodice has been altered. Brooch at neck. 1865. Bodice: Pale grey silk satin with a pattern of small squares woven into the fabric. Round neckline with piped edge. Bodice front from neckline to bust has been altered and blond lace has been attached in rows across the front. Drop shoulders with piped seams. Shaped sleeves, with fawn looped silk cord braid at cuffs and shoulder seam. Front of bodice fastens with seven buttons, six of which are cut steel centres on glass - the bottom button is black with a white floral pattern ( Buttons held on by metal clips through small eyelet holes). The top of the bodice fastening has two button holes with no buttons and two hook fastenings. A black oval cut-glass buckle has been sewn on at the neckline. The bodice is pointed at the waist front and is shaped with two darts either side of the front opening.The bodice has five bones. Lined with cream silk. Silk dress pads to shape the bust. All hand sewn. Skirt: Same fabric. Very full skirt constructed from seven gores. Narrow plain waistband. There is an opening at the centre left front fastening with two hooks and eyes. The waist is pleated, with a pocket in the centre right front gore seam. The centre back is heavily organ pleated for fullness. Small watch pocket opening in waist. Skirt is decorated at front with three lengths of ground fabric covered with looped braid. The back of the skirt is trained. Hem is decorated with a pleated fawn silk satin ribbon. Underside hem is lined with a fine mauve wool. The bottom of the skirt is lined in a cotton stiffening fabric. Belt: To be worn over skirt waistband. length of the ground fabric over a stiffening material, lined in white silk. Edged with braid, fastening with two metal hooks and eyes. With a four petal flower and two sways decorated with the looped braid at the back.
