DescriptionThis is a tortoiseshell oval patch box with a silver inlaid pattern on the lid. On the inside of the hinged lid there is a mirror. The face patches in these boxes have been used throughout the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries to cover blemishes or convey the wearers desires by where they were placed.
