DescriptionA long flat oval, tortoiseshell box. The lid has a decorative floral pattern and is detached from the base. In the centre of the lid is a small oval lozenge painted with a classical figure. The base of the box is lined with silk. Patch boxes like these were most fashionable in the mid-18th century and often given as gifts. They contained decorative patches used to cover scars caused by diseases such as smallpox and syphilis.
