DescriptionThree piece grey silk dress with fringing on the skirt and pink bow decoration. Circa 1878-1885. Bodice: Grey/green colour silk & high neck with hook and eye fastening & centre front fastening of nine domed buttons of pearl and gilt with back loops, attached to garment by metal rings - one button missing & sash effect on bodice - starting from centre bust, going over the shoulders and finishing in a cross at the back with pink silk ribbon & four vertical darts under the bust to shape & narrow waist band, fixing with two hooks and eyes & full length sleeves with cuffs that are pointed to the wrist with contrast piped edge & cuffs also decorated with pink bow trims and two layers of Bedfordshire Maltese lace at wrist & sleeves have traces of net lining & bodice lined with soft jap silk & internal pads at bust level. Waistband: narrow stiffened waistband that fastens with two hooks and eyes & pink ribbon bow at back. Skirt: Grey/green colour silk & waist tape of white ribbed cotton, fastening with two hooks and eyes & skirt set into waistband with four unpressed pleats at front & skirt divided into three sections at front by two applied rows of folded fabric, piped and edged with fringing, each meeting in a Vee at centre front & hem edged with wool braid & at back of skirt the two folded, fringed applied layers meet at the bustle, with two loose fringed and piped swags inbetween & bustle fullness is formed by pleating and gathering at the waist - there are ties on the inside to help maintain form & pocket in right side seam of skirt & watch pocket in skirt waistband & skirt lined with stiffened buckram or tarlatan.
