Silver buttons marked E.E. for East Essex Volunteers. Worn by Samuel Weeley. Regency, 1800-1820. Identified as a Grenadiers coatee because of the shoulder wings. Outer: Coatee of red wool facecloth. Large stand collar of green wool facecloth with border of silver thread embroidery and embroidered with a rectangle either side (with a button). Shoulder straps are sewn onto the shoulder wings and are fixed at the top with linen tape through two eyelet holes. Shoulder straps are decorated with seven lines of silver thread goldwork and a roped edging. Shoulder wings are decorated with silver thread crescents radiating from a gold thread Bursting Grenade, and edged with two layers of silver bullion. The wings are padded and lined in pink velvet. Full length, shaped sleeves with green cuffs, each decorated with four rectangles of silver thread goldwork and four silver buttons. Fastens centre front with nine pairs of metal hooks and eyes. Lapels of green facecloth, each decorated with nine rectangles and buttonholes and held back by nine silver buttons. Cuffs, collar and lapels all egded with cream wool. Waist length at front. Two short tails at the back with cream turnbacks and two angled false pocket flaps decorated with four rectangles and buttons. With four rectangles and two buttons at top and bottom. The tails each have a hidden pocket on the outside. The right tail has a Bursting Grenade badge on the turnback - raised grenade with flames of red, white and metal thread and spangles. Lining: Cream wool twill lining with quilting across the top of the back and shoulders. Sleeves are lined in cream linen. No pockets. Buttons: Domed silver buttons each marked 'E.E' in the centre of a star. Maker on back - 'C. Jennens, London' with motif. Creator London C.
