hat, top hat

Man's top hat in black silk, by Sam[ue]l Mortlock, 97 Gracechurch Street, London. In original leather covered box. Circa 1870. Hat : man's black silk plush top hat with slightly flared crown and black grosgrain ribbon around the bottom of the crown finishing in a bow on the left side. Black grosgrain ribbon edges the brim which curls up on each side. Underside of brim is black wool. Wide sweat band of tan glazed leather with white cord threaded through back third of leather to tighten. Bottom part of lining is glazed white cotton with a white silk piece in the top of the crown printed with coat of arms and makers label. Box : brown leather hat box in an oval shape, narrow at the bottom and flaring out at the top with separate concave curved lid. Leather handle on the top of the lid with a metal plate attached and with a narrow leather strap (broken) running over the top of the lid and fastening with a buckle. Metal lock on the front of the box. Lining is of cotton printed with a purple pattern of stripes and flowers over padding.
