DescriptionStraw bonnet of exquisite quality. Silk covered millinery wire frame, covered with two patterns of loom woven straw products known in Switzerland as Bordures or Borduren. Circa 1840s. Exquisite quality. Made from Swiss products, though the hat could have been made in England. Circa 1840. Construction - Silk covered millinery wire frame, covered with two patterns of loom woven straw products known in Switzerland as Bordures or Borduren. Each Bordure comprises 2-ply rye straw threads known as Schnürli. Split straw three end plait known as Ring. Warp threads probably silk. Sides of bonnet strengthened with whole straw Tuscan Plait with eleven ends. No evidence of lining, although examples of this type of bonnet usually are lined. Also no evidence of ties.
