DescriptionMauve two piece wedding dress consisting of cuirass bodice and skirt. Made by Mrs K Kersewell circa 1878-87. Worn by Lovina Cross when she married John Smith at St Martin's in the Field on 1st February 1882. Bodice: cuirass style bodice of mauve silk satin and grosgrain & high neck with small stand collar and a band of satin & centre front fastening of 15 self covered buttons & constructed from six panels, the back two being divided from the hips and longer & boned & full length sleeves - cuffs are gathered at the front with a pleated grosgrain silk frill either side & watch pocket on front left side & both handstitched and machine made. Skirt: skirt of mauve silk satin and grosgrain & petersham waistband with 'Mrs Kersewell, 70 Grosvenor Street' printed on it & front of skirt is plain to mid thigh, then there is a long panel of tafetta, tabbed at the bottom, with ruched centre & below this there are six pleated frills, alternately of grosgrain and satin & the hem is lined with a protective panel, the whole skirt is lined with muslin & the back of the skirt, the bustle, is gently pleated from the waist down to a tabbed satin panel with a large bow, after which there is a grosgrain train constructed from 18 pleats & skirt fastens left hand side or bustle with two hooks and eyes & pocket on right side of bustle
