dress, tea dance dress

Full length black taffeta tea dance dress with scattering of appliqued blue and red flowers and artificial silk flower corsage. Circa late 1930s. Dress : full length black rayon or silk taffetta with boat neck & very full three-quarter length sleeves narrowing below elbow with pleats at shoulders and stiffened frills inside to provide volume. Four horizontal pleats at centre front at waist level. Skirt cut on the cross and finely gathered onto low waist with cartridge pleating and dropping to ankle length. Large black taffetta bow sewn onto front left waist and artificial silk flower corsage at left shoulder. Fastening at side placket with hooks and eyes. Back of bodice fastens with 23 self covered buttons. Fine silk crepe flowers in red and pink & dark and pale blue have been appliqued on with machine zig-zag stitching all over the dress. Some staining on the skirt
