In 1857 the Indian people tried to take back control of their land in a failed attempt known as the ‘War of Indian Independence of 1857’ or in Britain as the ‘Indian Rebellion’. India became an official colony of the British Empire the following year and the British Prime Minister gave Queen Victoria the title ‘Empress of India’.Banner celebrating Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee.
