DescriptionBonnet of Tuscan straw plait, lined in yellow silk at a later date. Circa 1840s. Plait of Tuscan straw hand stitched together overlapping. Hat constructed in England from the Italian plait. The lining is not original - the colour would have been ivory. Modern restoration. Originally it would have had a silk lining and there would have been silk covered millinery wire visible around the rim. There would have been a bavolet (frill) around the neck. Likely to be 1840s in date. Bonnet of Tuscan straw plait hand stitched together in a spiral pattern from the back of the crown with a deep brim shaped to rounded points on each side. Bonnet is lined in a fine yellow silk, right up to the edges of the brim.
