DescriptionBlack satin dress. Dated 1890 to 1920. Worn by Edith Clark (nee Sharrett) of Chingford, Essex High waistline with black and white lace edging to stand-up collar. Unboned bodice. Shaped sleeves (1870s cut for elbow), lace at wrists. Centre front popper fastening. Decorative bow stitched to collar. Wide black machine lace extends from front waist over shoulders to back waist seam. Panel of lace from waist to throat. Lace decoration to cuffs and sash. Waist seam covered by narrow black satin belt and bow. Plain skirt with soft pleats. With dress protectors. Dress usually worn with a waist apron of black satin with broad lace at bottom.
