DescriptionWoman's navy blue heavy wool overcoat. Circa 1900 - 1920. Coat of heavy wool, dark navy in colour with turn down collar & sleeves in set with six darts to shoulder to provide fullness & opening centre front fastening with three round metal buttons. Cut in panels with a centre back seam, no side seams & lower side panels cut with semi-circles and one metal button on each side. Collar reveres and cuffs decorated with appliqued ellipses of dark navy velvet edged in two rows of narrow blue braid and two small metal buttons at top and bottom (some missing). Unlined but with binding on inside of sleeve seams & coarse brown hessian interlining under the facing on each side of the front opening. Probably a cheaper garment because of the coarse quality of the wool and lack of fine finishing. Danielle Sprecher, Costume Curator : 17.2.2010
