DescriptionPloughman's Sunday smock in brown heavy cotton or linen twill weave. Circa 1860s. Worn by Alfred Polley in the 1890s in his large garden in Birch. Brown heavy cotton or linen twill & same design front and back & buttoned down collar edged with brown feather stitched border & collar on one side edged with linen & neckline front and back each fasten with buttons (brown dyed bone) & full length sleeves with smocking and two metal buttons at each cuff, and smocking at the top of the sleeve & smocked central panel front and back with horizontal stitching & panels either side of smocking decorated with zigzag feather stitching & shoulder panels have three plain lines of feather stitching & two flat side pockets with flaps fastening with buttons & side slits in seam at hem.
