DescriptionBlack straw bonnet with black velvet ribbon bows and ties, black matt sequins, pink and red velvet flowers and black lace decoration. Lined in black silk. Label under lining 'Harry Loomes Milliner, 86 and 87 High St, Colchester' 1880-1900c. Bonnet constructed from silk covered metal millinery wire covered. Wire base covered with black plant fibre (straw) braid in overlapping layers with ruffled edges and crown. Braid on brim and braid at back of head also have black chenile wool threaded through. On the left side of the crown there are black velvet ribbon bows. On the right side of the crown is a rosette of black lace with a velvet and silk flower. Plant fibre braid on centre of crown is trimmed with matt black sequins.Top of the crown is festooned with matt black sequins on looped wire and crin(?), and a second velvet and silk flower. The flowers are pink and red. Black velvet ribbon trims the bottom of the bonnet and forms two long ties (tied in a bow). Inside of bonnet is llined in black silk with a central draw string and a black velvet ribbon hat band.
