DescriptionTail feathers of a male Little Egret (egretta garzetta). Would have been used for hat decoration in the 19th Century. Individual long Egret feathers are known as aigrettes (usually the tufted crest, or head-plumes of the egret). Little Egrets are only just returning to their UK habitats after being wiped out in the 19th century for their feathers, which were used extensively in headwear and uniform.
