DescriptionLadies heavy black cotton(?) velvet cloak, decorated with plaited plant fibre(?) braid and appliqued spiral and swirl decoration. c.1855-1870. Cloak of heavy black cotton(?) velvet, finishing above the knee. Large turn down collar finishing in points at the front and at centre back. Extra top layer that starts below the shoulders and finishes at the waist, with scalloped edge and point centre back. Large decorative knotted cord ties at the kneck. Eight large black metal hook and eye fastening over chest. Decorated with plant fibre(?) plaited/woven braid that has raised diamond pattern. This is augmented with appliqued lines of narrow braid in looped and spiral patterns around the braid. Black sateen lining, quilted (with machine stitching) except at centre front - patched at front. Pocket on left inside.
