DescriptionA fragment of purbeck marble said to have been found in Balkerne Lane. The inscription is only partly visible. Former curators have suggested it refers to the First Cohort of the Vardulli, a Spanish cavalry unit, which was stationed in Colchester. However, the inscription is very fragmentary. The D at the start suggests it could have been a funeral inscription with the typical DIS MANIBVS (to the spirits of the departed).
