DescriptionHuman femur, thigh bone, found in a Roman pit within the Butt Road apsidal building. The pit is referred to as Hull's Pit, after Rex Hull who discovered it during excavations in 1935. Although this building is often thought to be a church, the presence of such a pit containing human remains within it would suggest that, at least when it was first built, this was not the case, as Christianity ensure human remains are kept outside of church walls. The femur is believed to be an adult woman's bone, mostly due to it's association with a skull also found in the pit (COLEM:1936.907.4). However the use of cranial analysis to determine sex is not always accurate and this assessment was done in the 1930s.
