DescriptionHuman skull found in a Roman pit within the Butt Road apsidal building. The pit is referred to as Hull's Pit, after Rex Hull who discovered it during excavations in 1935. Although this building is often thought to be a church, the presence of such a pit containing human remains within it would suggest that, at least when it was first built, this was not the case, as Christianity ensure human remains are kept outside of church walls. The skull is believed to be that of an adult woman and is possibly associated with a femur found in the pit (COLEM:1936.907.3). However the use of cranial analysis to determine sex is not always accurate and this assessment was done in the 1930s.
