DescriptionHuman upper arm bone (humerous) showing damage from an axe or sword cut. Excavation of the legionary fortress ditch at Balkerne Lane in Colchester found gruesome evidence for the severe treatment of Britons in the years before the Boudican revolt of AD 60-61. This arm bone was one of thirty bones found that represented as least six individuals. Four were young males, aged between about seventeen and twenty-five. None of the bones showed signs of healing from their wounds, suggesting they were inflicted at the time of death. Their heads were likely decapitated and exhibited on stakes by the Romans.
