DescriptionA copper alloy ansate (rectangular with tabs along the short ends similar to handles) Roman plaque. A punched inscription is on it reading [---]VSCV / [---]M, though due to its fragmentary nature it is extremely difficult to interpret. Roger Tomlin, Emeritus Fellow of Wolfson College, Oxford and specialist in Roman inscriptions, has suggested the bottom part reads VSLM, which stands for votum solvit libens merito meaning 'discharges the vow freely, as is deserved'. The top part might be a name ending -us with the second part of the name beginning Cu-.
