DescriptionImpression of the seal of Edward II for recognizances (court ordered obligations) of debtors, Exeter, dating AD 1307-1327.The object has been identified as part of the LGBT+ collections as it depicts King Edward II of England. Edward II ruled for 20 years (AD 1307-1327) but unusually for rulers at the time, he abdicated. Rumour circulated that it was as a result of a relationship he had with Piers Gaviston (a young noble) and even worse, after his death it was suggested he had been murdered by having a hot poker inserted into his anus as punishment.
