The intaglio might have arrived in Britain in antiquity and have been found and reset in its thirteenth century matrix. However, it was more probably found in Italy and formed part of the flourishing trade in ancient gems in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries when there was a fashion for re-setting them in personal seals.
