DescriptionMedieval silver seal matrix with Roman intaglio. The carnelian intaglio depicts a grasshopper upon an ear of wheat, cut in a style very typical of the late Republic, second-first century BC. The thirteenth-century silver matrix is inscribed +SIGIL : SECRETI (secret seal). The subject is a common one and the subject clearly indicative of prosperity, dating back to Classical times. The intaglio might have arrived in Britain in antiquity and have been found and reset in its thirteenth century matrix. However, it was more probably found in Italy and formed part of the flourishing trade in ancient gems in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries when there was a fashion for re-setting them in personal seals.
