DescriptionReplica statue head of the Roman Emperor Nero, previously thought to represent Emperor Claudius who invaded Britain in AD 43. The original was found in the river Alde at Rendham, near Saxmundham, Suffolk and is now in the British Museum. It has been argued that the head of the statue, if representing Claudius, may have been removed during the Boudican rebellion and subsequent destruction of Colchester. If the head represents Nero, it may have been removed and the statue destroyed as part the emperor's damnatio memoriae (the 'condemnation of memory'), which sought to erase his identity and representation.
