DescriptionThis fragment of a Roman mould for making Samian ware bowls is decorated with a bear. Bears were commonly seen at Roman games, featuring in the Beast Hunts as well as the midday executions. Some prisoners were sentenced to Damnatio ad bestias - put to death by wild animals.
