DescriptionA Roman amphora in many fragments, reconstructed. It is missing the top: rim, neck, shoulder and handles, but the body is cylindrical and fits into Dressel type 2-4. The shape and fabric suggests it was made in and used to transport goods from Italy. Amphora of this type were used principally to transport wine, but could also have been used for olive oil, fish-based sauces, grape syrup (defrutum) and dates. Sometimes, they are found in high status British burials, especially late Iron Age burials. This one comes from the Stanway 'Warrior's Grave'.
